Item Nonresponse in Wages: Testing for Biased Estimates in Wage Equations
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates how to test and correct for nonresponse selection bias induced by missing income information when estimating wage functions. The novelty is to use the variation in interviewer-specifi c response rates as exclusion restriction within the framework of a sample selection model. JEL Classifi cation: J30

Wage Gap Estimation with Proxies and Nonresponse
Earnings nonresponse in the Current Population Survey (CPS) is about 30% in the monthly surveys and 20% in the annual March surveys. Half of CPS earnings records rely on “proxy” respondents, among whom nonresponse is particularly high. Even if nonresponse is random, severe bias attaches to wage equation coefficient estimates on non-match (and some imperfectly matched) imputation attributes. If ...

Is Earnings Nonresponse Ignorable? Earnings nonresponse in the Current Population Survey is roughly 30% in the monthly surveys and 20% in the annual March survey. Even if nonresponse is random, severe bias attaches to wage equation coefficient estimates on attributes not matched in the earnings imputation hot deck. If nonresponse is ignorable, unbiased estimates can be achieved by omitting impu...
متن کاملParametric and semiparametric model-based estimates of the finite population mean for two-stage cluster samples with item nonresponse.
This article concerns item nonresponse adjustment for two-stage cluster samples. Specifically, we focus on two types of nonignorable nonresponse: nonresponse depending on covariates and underlying cluster characteristics, and depending on covariates and the missing outcome. In these circumstances, standard weighting and imputation adjustments are liable to be biased. To obtain consistent estima...
متن کاملThe Dynamic Effects of Export and Technological Changes on Relative Wages
he links among trade, technological changes, and worker earnings have been the subject of intense research during the past few decades. The current literature on this subject shows that trade liberalization and technological changes are the main drivers of demand for skilled workers and a rise in the wage premium. In the present article, a panel of 134 Iranian manufacturing industries over the ...
متن کاملWage Differentials across Labor Markets and Workers: Does Cost of Living Matter?
Wage differential studies rare& account for interarea differences in cost of living, owing both to data limitations and theoretical ambiguity. This study develops a price index for 185 metropolitan areas comprising about 70% of the US. labor force. Current Population Survey data for 1985-95 and data on site-speci’c amenities are used to estimate earnings differentials based on nominal wages, wa...
